Are 3D and 4D Number Plates Legal in the UK?

Are 3D and 4D Number Plates Legal in the UK?

Introduction

3D and 4D number plates have become hugely popular in recent years, thanks to their bold, premium appearance. But are they actually road legal in the UK? The short answer is yes — but only if they meet the strict standards set by the DVLA. Here's what you need to know.

What Are 3D and 4D Number Plates?

3D number plates feature raised gel resin characters or the most sought after pressed metal characters that give the plate a three-dimensional look. The characters are bonded to the plate surface and have a rounded, domed appearance for the gel and embossed for the pressed metal

4D number plates use laser-cut acrylic characters that are also raised from the plate surface, but with sharper, more defined edges compared to 3D gel plates. They have a bold, crisp appearance that's very popular on modern vehicles.

Are They Road Legal?

Yes — both 3D and 4D number plates are road legal in the UK, provided they comply with the British Standard BS AU 145e. To be road legal, number plates must:

  • Display characters in the correct font (Charles Wright font)
  • Have the correct character size and spacing
  • Show white background on the front plate and yellow on the rear
  • Be marked with the British Standard number, the name/postcode of the supplier, and the BS AU 145e certification
  • Not have any background pattern or colour that makes the plate harder to read

What About Coloured or Tinted Characters?

This is where many drivers fall foul of the law. Characters must be black on a white (front) or yellow (rear) background. Coloured characters — such as blue, red, or green — are not road legal and can result in a fine and a failed MOT.

What About Pressed Metal 3D Plates?

Pressed metal 3D aluminium plates, like those sold by Metal Plates Britain, are also road legal provided they meet the same BS AU 145e standards. The characters are physically embossed into the aluminium, creating a genuine three-dimensional plate with exceptional depth and durability.

How to Make Sure Your Plates Are Legal

Always buy from a registered number plate supplier who can verify your entitlement to the registration. Reputable suppliers will ensure their plates are fully compliant with DVLA standards and carry the required BS AU 145e marking.

Summary

3D and 4D number plates are legal in the UK as long as they meet BS AU 145e standards, use the correct font and colours, and are purchased from a registered supplier. Avoid any plates with coloured characters or non-standard fonts to stay on the right side of the law.
