How to Fit a Number Plate at Home

Introduction
Fitting a number plate at home is a straightforward job that most drivers can do themselves in just a few minutes. Whether you've ordered a new pressed metal plate or a standard replacement, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather the following:
- Your new number plate
- A screwdriver (if using screws)
- Number plate sticky pads or double-sided adhesive tape
- A clean cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol or a mild cleaning solution
Method 1: Using Sticky Pads (Recommended)
Sticky pads are the most popular and cleanest way to fit a number plate. They leave no visible fixings and give a sleek, professional finish.
- Clean the surface — Wipe the area on your bumper where the plate will sit with isopropyl alcohol or a mild cleaner. Make sure it's completely dry before proceeding.
- Peel and stick the pads — Apply the sticky pads to the back of your number plate, spacing them evenly around the edges and centre.
- Position the plate — Hold the plate up to the bumper and check it's straight and centred before pressing firmly.
- Press and hold — Press the plate firmly against the bumper for 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
- Leave to cure — For best results, avoid washing the car for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully cure.
Method 2: Using Screws
Some vehicles have pre-drilled holes for number plate screws. If yours does, this method is quick and secure.
- Align the plate — Hold the plate over the existing holes and mark where the screws will go if needed.
- Screw in place — Use number plate screws (usually self-tapping) to fix the plate securely. Don't overtighten as this can crack the plate.
- Add screw caps — Fit plastic screw caps over the fixings for a neat finish.
Tips for Pressed Metal Number Plates
Pressed metal aluminium plates are slightly heavier than standard acrylic plates, so we recommend using high-quality, heavy-duty sticky pads for the best results. Our LIONTAPE super adhesive fitting pads are specifically designed for metal number plates and the additional weight and provide an incredibly strong, long-lasting bond.
Is It Legal to Fit Your Own Number Plate?
Yes — there is no legal requirement for a professional to fit your number plate. However, the plate itself must meet DVLA standards and display the correct registration. Always ensure your plates are purchased from a registered number plate supplier.
